Sports Injury & Performance Rehab

We treat the whole athlete —
not just the injury

Sports injuries are part of the game — but lingering pain doesn't have to be. At High Amplitude Health, we specialize in treating and rehabilitating a wide range of athletic injuries using hands-on therapy and targeted exercise rehab to get you moving again, fast.

Whether you're dealing with a strained hamstring, runner's knee, shoulder impingement, shin splints, or chronic back pain from training, our comprehensive care addresses muscle and tendon strain, overuse and repetitive motion injuries, joint pain and inflammation, and the biomechanical imbalances that cause injuries to keep coming back.

Many athletes push through discomfort until it becomes chronic — reducing performance and increasing the risk of further damage. We identify and fix the root cause so you come back stronger, not just symptom-free.

Why It Works

Three phases, one
complete recovery plan

Phase 1 — Hands-on tissue release
We start with Active Release Therapy, trigger point therapy, and vibration therapy to release tight muscles, break down adhesions, and restore proper nerve signaling to injured tissues.
These techniques prime the tissue for movement — without this step first, exercise rehab is less effective and slower to produce lasting results.
Phase 2 — Movement retraining
Once tissues are primed, we introduce high-rep, low-resistance exercise to reestablish functional movement patterns and retrain the neuromuscular pathways disrupted by injury.
These aren't strength exercises yet — they're precision movements designed to "remind" muscles how to fire correctly in a healthier tissue environment.
Phase 3 — Strength & performance
As healing progresses, we gradually build strength, stability, and power — tailored to your sport or activity — to prevent re-injury and enhance your performance going forward.
The goal isn't just to get you back to where you were. It's to build a more resilient, better-functioning body than you had before the injury.
Chiropractic spinal adjusting
Precise spinal adjustments correct misalignments and relieve nerve pressure caused by athletic loading and injury — reducing inflammation and restoring proper joint mechanics throughout the body.
Integrated throughout all three phases, not just at the end. Spinal health directly impacts muscular performance and recovery speed.
Sports massage
Deep tissue massage, stretching, and joint mobilization enhance circulation, reduce soreness, and keep muscles supple. Used both in injury recovery and ongoing performance maintenance.
Athletes who include sports massage in their maintenance plan experience fewer injuries and faster recovery between training sessions.
Personalized treatment plans
From professional athletes to recreational runners and fitness enthusiasts — every plan is built around your specific injury, sport, activity level, and performance goals.
No cookie-cutter protocols. Dr. John assesses your biomechanics and movement patterns to design a plan that addresses the root cause — not just the symptom.
Who It Helps

Who we treat
and how we help

From competitive athletes to weekend warriors, we treat the full spectrum of sports and performance-related injuries — as well as overuse conditions that affect active people of every level.

01

Muscle & Tendon Strains

Hamstring pulls, calf strains, rotator cuff tears, Achilles tendinopathy — ART and progressive rehab exercise restore tissue integrity and rebuild strength around the injury site.

02

Runner's Knee & IT Band Syndrome

Repetitive impact sports create chronic compression patterns. We release the underlying tissue restrictions and retrain hip and knee mechanics to stop the cycle.

03

Shoulder Impingement & Rotator Cuff

Overhead athletes and gym-goers commonly develop impingement from poor mechanics. We combine soft tissue release, adjusting, and targeted shoulder rehab to restore pain-free range of motion.

04

Shin Splints & Overuse Injuries

Overuse injuries respond especially well to ART — which breaks the scar tissue cycle that keeps these injuries recurring — combined with biomechanical correction and load management.

05

Back Pain from Training

Deadlifts, squats, running, cycling — athletic loading frequently causes disc, facet, and muscle injuries. Chiropractic adjusting combined with core rehab exercise resolves these faster than rest alone.

06

Biomechanical Imbalances

Injuries often reveal underlying movement dysfunction — a hip that doesn't load properly, an ankle that restricts dorsiflexion. We correct the root cause so the same injury doesn't keep coming back.

07

Performance Maintenance

Many athletes use ongoing care proactively — regular sports massage, tune-up adjustments, and mobility work — to stay at peak performance and reduce injury risk throughout their season.

About Dr. John Blenio

Sports medicine expertise
built over 16 years

Dr. John has spent 16 years developing an integrated sports medicine approach that goes beyond what a traditional physical therapist or chiropractor alone can offer. His training spans Active Release Techniques, sports rehabilitation, chiropractic spinal manipulation, and progressive exercise programming — combined into a single, cohesive model built around how athletes actually move and recover.

What sets Dr. John apart isn't just his clinical training — it's that he's lived the athlete experience himself. He grew up competing in soccer, track, football, and basketball, and sports have remained central to his life ever since. Today, he competes as an Enduro mountain bike racer, taking 1st place in his age bracket in the California Enduro Series. He knows what it takes to push your body, what it feels like when an injury threatens to sideline you, and what a complete recovery actually requires.

That shared experience shapes how he treats every patient. Whether you're training for a triathlon, recovering from a torn muscle, or just trying to stay active without pain — you're working with someone who genuinely understands what's at stake for you as an athlete.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about
sports injury & performance rehab

Do I have to be a competitive athlete to come in? +
Not at all. We treat everyone from professional and collegiate athletes to weekend warriors, gym enthusiasts, runners, cyclists, and anyone who is physically active. If your injury or pain is tied to movement or athletic activity, we can help — regardless of your level.
How is this different from going to a physical therapist? +
Physical therapists typically focus on exercise and modalities like ultrasound or electrical stimulation. Dr. John adds Active Release Therapy, trigger point therapy, sports massage, and chiropractic spinal adjusting to that foundation — treating the soft tissue and structural causes of injury that exercise alone can't fix.
How soon after an injury should I come in? +
The sooner the better. Early treatment prevents scar tissue from forming improperly and reduces the risk of chronic dysfunction. Most acute sports injuries can be treated within the first few days — we'll work around any swelling or acute inflammation and adjust treatment intensity accordingly.
Can I continue training while receiving treatment? +
Often yes — with modifications. One of the advantages of our approach is that we work with your training schedule rather than just telling you to rest. Dr. John will advise on load management and activity modifications so you can stay as active as safely possible throughout recovery.
How many sessions will I need? +
Most patients with acute sports injuries notice significant improvement within 3–6 sessions. Chronic or more complex injuries may require longer care. Dr. John will give you a realistic timeline at your first visit based on your specific injury, activity level, and goals.
Do you offer maintenance care for athletes in-season? +
Yes. Many athletes use regular visits for sports massage, mobility work, and adjustments as part of their performance maintenance routine — not just injury recovery. Staying ahead of tissue tightness and joint restrictions is one of the best ways to prevent injuries during a heavy training block or competitive season.
What sports and activities do you commonly treat? +
We treat injuries from running, cycling, triathlon, swimming, CrossFit, weightlifting, tennis, golf, basketball, soccer, baseball, and general gym training. If you're active and hurting, we can help — regardless of the sport.

Don't let the injury
become chronic.

Athletes who treat early recover faster and more completely. Join hundreds of San Mateo patients who've returned to their sport stronger with Dr. John's three-phase wholistic approach.
